Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a common neurological chronic disorder that is characterized by the recurrent unprovoked seizure. Seizures are signs or transient or symptoms of abnormal, synchronous or excessive neuronal activity in brain. Near 50 million people have epilepsy worldwide, almost 90% of these being in the developed countries, Epilespy is likely occur in young children, people over age of 65 years. Epilepsy is not cured, but is controlled usually, with medication, surgery may be considered in some difficult cases.

 

Over 30% of people having epilepsy do not have controlled seizure, even with beset available medications. It should not be understood as single discover, rather group of syndromes with divergent symptoms all involving episodic electrical abnormal activity in brain.

In year 1981, international league Against Epilepsy proposed classification scheme for individual seizures that remain in the common use. Such classification is based on the observation rather than underlying pathophysiology or anatomy is outlined. Diagnosis of epilepsy is usually requires that seizures occur spontaneously. Certain epilepsy requires particular precipitants or the triggers for seizures to occur. It is one of common serious neurologically disorders.

 

The genetic development and congenital conditions are associated mostly among younger patients. Prevalence of active epilepsy is in range of 5 to 10 per 1000 people.

Seizure types of epilepsy are organized firstly according to source of seizure within brain is distributed or localized. A Partial seizure may spared within brain, this process is known as a secondary generalization, while generalized seizures are divided, it is according to effect on body, all these involves in loss of the consciousness.
